Green Technology Could Bring More Than 1,000 Jobs To Area

June 19th, 2009

Green technology might breathe new life into a local General Motors plant that’s closing down.A renewable energy company called the D’Arcinoff Group has expressed interest in taking over the newly closed GM plant in Massena. They would use GM’s equipment to build wind turbines.

Group officials said the project would employ 105,000 people across 15 manufacturing sites in multiple states. No exact number on how many of those jobs would be at the Massena plant.Still, many in Massena said it was the brightest economic prospect they had seen in years.

“A lot of businesses have closed,” said Kathy Malark. “GM is not doing well, and Alcoa is not doing well so anything we can bring to the community will actually help the town of Massena.

“I think it would be wonderful news to bring in a new industry to a community that’s struggling,” said Valorie Eve of Ottawa.Massena Mayor Randy DeLosh said he’s also excited at the prospect. “We have a lot of displaced workers right now in the area,” DeLosh said. “You’re talking both management and the union out there you’re talking a little over 800 people that have lost their jobs and could get them back.

“The GM plant in Massena doesn’t close officially until June 26.
